DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:        This position has responsibility for overseeing and participating in the day-to-day work of a crew of unskilled and semi-skilled workers engaged in Recreation, Forestry and Parks Department activities.  The work involves light to medium physical effort and is often performed under adverse weather conditions.  The work is performed under the supervision of the Recreation Crew Leader with leeway allowed to exercise independent judgment in carrying out the details of the work.  Supervision is not a responsibility of this class, but incumbent will oversee crew work in assignments.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Lead and assist work crew in the maintenance, development, and repairs of Lewis County recreational trails and county-owned park facilities;
  • Operate a truck, trailer, dump truck, excavator, loader, mowers, trimmer, chainsaws and other equipment or hand tools as needed to maintain and sign the trails;
  • Assist in routine maintenance of county-owned parks including mow lawns, maintain water lines, trash pickup and disposal, supply replacement, cleaning facilities and fireplaces, stain repair and maintain picnic tables, fireplaces and signs and assist in maintenance requirements;
  • Assist in marking of timber;
  • Maintain safety precautions in all work;
  • Assist in the maintenance, transfer and light repair of trucks, equipment, and supplies;
  • Complete reports and update records;
  • All other duties as assigned.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Knowledge of tools, materials, methods and practices common to forestry, wildlife and recreational trails, including but not limited to chain saws; ability to operate a truck, trailer, tractor, dump truck, excavator, loader, mowers, trimmers, chainsaws and other equipment or hand tools; ability to plan, assign and direct the activities of a crew; ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; knowledge of handheld GPS beneficial but not required; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and two years’ work experience in forestry, trails, parks or similar work involving construction logging or maintenance.

 

Special Necessary Requirements: Required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid CDL License as required by the New York State Department of Motor vehicles.
