MOTOR EQUIPEMENT OPERATOR (LIGHT)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Operates one or more types of light automotive equipment and performs a variety of manual tasks in connection with such operations; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: These duties involve responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of light motor equipment along with the performance of ordinary manual labor. The work is usually performed under close supervision.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Operates a single axle truck in connection with hauling material for road maintenance or construction;
Operates a light truck to transport workers, tools and other equipment;
Operates a tractor mower cutting grass and brush from road sides and other public areas;
Operates a small roller, broom or other light highway construction equipment;
Operates a small snow plow or related snow removal equipment;
May perform routine housekeeping tasks such as sweeping floors, and minor repairs and painting;
Loads and unloads trucks;
Performs a variety of laboring tasks;
May act as a wingman on a heavy snowplow;
May be required to clean and oil the equipment.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the operation of tractors, mowers, automobiles, single axle trucks and other light automotive equipment; ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; industry; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: One year of experience in the operation of some type of light automotive equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ACCEPTANCE OF APPLICATIONS:

Eligibility for an appropriate New York State Commercial Driver’s License. Possession of the license at the time of appointment.

LABORER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the performance of general laboring or construction tasks, requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform arduous tasks in inclement weather. The incumbent generally uses hand and power tools to perform the work but may occasionally operate automotive equipment under close supervision of a qualified operator. The work is performed under direct supervision. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Performs a variety of manual labor tasks subject to inclement weather conditions and often in an unpleasant environment;
Assists in the maintenance or construction of roads, streets, utility and drainage systems by digging and backfilling trenches, spreading asphalt, sand and gravel;
Assists in preparation, laying out and maintenance of athletic fields and areas designated for beautification by clearing, grading, reseeding, weeding and lining;
Paints fences, benches, picnic tables, etc.;
Operates power driven tools and equipment such as compressors, drills, mixers, pumps and mowers;
Uses hand tools such as shovels, axes, scythes, forks and rakes in grounds maintenance and beautification work;
Loads and unloads trucks and stacks materials and supplies;
Acts as flagman on highway jobs, directs trucks at loading and unloading sites;
Operates power tools and equipment such as saws, mixers, jackhammers and tampers;
Cleans vehicles and buildings;
Assists in erecting or assembling snow fences, barricades, picnic tables and recreation equipment;
Performs general clean-up work such as removing debris, raking leaves, cutting grass and weeds, shoveling snow, and assisting in the collection of rubbish and litter from public lands and facilities.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Willingness to perform routine manual tasks; ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds or more; ability to follow simple oral or written instructions; willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions; physical endurance; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: None.
