MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES COORDINATOR
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a professional position responsible for providing oversight, support, and guidance for services provided by the department and contracted service providers. The work involves responsibility for case management and continuity of care for high-need clients in the community. A Mental Health Services Coordinator is supervised by the Director of Community Services with leeway for independent judgment allowed. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Develops, implements, and maintains a single point of accountability for case management;
- Tracks and reports relevant statistical information on a regular basis as required by New York State regulatory agencies;
- Engages in activities to increase clinical accountability, best practices and coordination for high-risk clients and their families;
- Coordinates, implements, and operates the procedures and program components related to the various State and Local Initiatives;
- Compiles required statistics and reports;
- Represents the department at local committees, coalitions, and in the absence of the director;
- Organizes and facilitates meetings;
- Organizes and participates in activities intended to increase awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and substance use;
- Works with community agencies to reduce barriers to care;
- Assists Community Service Department and Board in other projects or activities to improve the coordination of behavioral health services, continuity of care and other activities to promote quality behavioral health care in the community.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of the practices and procedures of social work; good knowledge of interviewing techniques; good knowledge of New York State Mental Hygiene Law; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; ability to function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team for treatment plans; ability to understand and empathize with the needs and concerns of others; ability to analyze and organize data and prepare records and reports; ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Master’s Degree in a Human Services Field and two (2) years of full-time paid experience working in an organization that provides mental health, substance use or developmental disabilities services; or
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services Field*, and four (4) years of full-time paid experience working in an organization that provides mental health, substance use, or developmental disabilities services.
*For purposes of qualifying for these titles, a “Human Services field” includes Social Work, Psychology, Substance Abuse Counseling, Counseling, Community Mental Health.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment. License must remain valid throughout appointment.
