The County Attorney provides full time counsel and is the sole legal advisor to the County Board of Legislators, the County Manager, and the various departments, boards and commissions of County government on all civil matters. The County Attorney is appointed by the Board of Legislators and serves at its pleasure. The County Attorney serves as the Freedom of Information Officer as well as the Chair of the County’s Corporate Compliance Committee. The Lewis County Attorney employs an Assistant County Attorney (ACA) who provides legal representation for the Department of Social Services in Family Court matters of child support, neglect and abuse, adoption, and custody. In addition, the ACA represents the Probation Department in the prosecution of Juvenile Delinquents (JDs) and Persons in Need of Supervision (PINS), as well as prosecutions of juvenile offenders (JO’s) and adolescent offenders (AO’s) under raise the age legislation, and provides other legal services as directed by the County Attorney.
