- Administer and enforce provisions of the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code Act.
- Administer and enforce Local Land use / Zoning Laws.
- Administer and enforce Local Flood Damage Prevention Laws.
- Review Design Documents for compliance with Uniform Code(s) and adopted standards.
- Conduct state mandated inspections of all commercial buildings, Places of public assembly, and multiple family dwellings
- Issue Building, Zoning and Flood plain Development Permits.
- Conduct state mandated construction inspections.
Investigate complaints that assert violations of the Uniform Code and or Local Laws

Building Permits – Residential and Commercial
Apply for a building permit online:
Lewis County uses a cloud-based software Cloudpermit so you can complete the entire building permit process online on any mobile device. With Cloudpermit, you can:
- Apply for building permits at any time, from anywhere.
- Check the status of your building permit or building inspection (when your application status changes, you’ll automatically receive an email letting you know).
- Schedule or cancel building inspections.
- Communicate with your building department with time-stamped messages.
- Request and submit changes to an existing building permit.
- Pay for your building permit with a credit card.
- Payments are still being processed by the code enforcement department.

To start, create your Cloudpermit account by visiting Cloudpermit – Log In. Once registered, you can apply for building permits and track their progress online.
